3. General Information on Data Processing

a) Subject and Purpose of Processing Personal Data

This website serves the public presentation of all information about the Master’s degree program “Battery Science and Technology in Engineering,” offered at RWTH Aachen University. Visitors to the site are supported in their decision regarding personal further education and are directed to register for the program.

b) Recipients of the Data

The data is exclusively received by RWTH Aachen University, in particular by the Institute for Power Electronics and Electrical Drives.

c) Legal Basis for Processing Personal Data

The processing of personal data related to providing information about the degree program “Battery Science and Technology in Engineering” is conducted as part of the university’s public relations work. The legal basis is Art. 6 para. 1 sentence 1 lit. e), para. 3 GDPR in conjunction with § 3 para. 1 DSG NRW in conjunction with §§ 3, 8 para. 6 HG NRW.

d) Data Deletion and Storage Period

Personal data of the data subject will be deleted or blocked as soon as the purpose of their collection is no longer necessary. Storage may occur beyond this if required by European or national legislation in regulations, laws, or other provisions to which the Data Controller is subject. Blocking or deletion of data also takes place when a legally required storage period expires unless further storage is necessary for contract conclusion or fulfillment.


4. Provision of the Website and Creation of Log Files

a) Subject and Purpose of Processing Personal Data

When this website is accessed, an exchange of information between your device (e.g., computer, tablet, or smartphone) and the servers hosting the website is technically necessary to establish communication. Additionally, data related to this activity is temporarily processed and stored in a log file. Specifically, the following data is collected:

Date and time of access, User’s IP address, Request details and destination address, Name of the retrieved file, Data volume transferred, Notification of whether the access/retrieval was successful, Information about the browser type and version used, Information about the user’s operating system, Internet service provider of the user, Websites from which the user’s system reached the RWTH Aachen University website, Information about the accessed websites and files.

Log data is processed for the proper operation of the website, i.e., to identify, limit, or eliminate disruptions or errors. It is also processed for technical security, especially to protect against and defend against cyberattacks.

b) Legal Basis for Processing Personal Data

The temporary storage of data for technical communication and log files is based on Art. 6 para. 1 sentence 1 lit. e), para. 3 GDPR in conjunction with § 3 para. 1 DSG NRW in conjunction with §3 HG NRW.

c) Data Deletion and Storage Period

The data is deleted as soon as it is no longer necessary for the purpose of its collection, typically after seven days. Extended storage is possible. In such cases, users’ IP addresses are deleted or anonymized, making it impossible to associate them with the accessing client.


5. Use of Cookies

a) Subject and Purpose of Processing Personal Data

This website uses cookies. Cookies are information managed by the internet browser, usually in a database. When a user accesses a website, a cookie may be stored on the user’s device. This cookie contains a unique identifier for recognizing the browser upon repeated visits.

Cookies ensure functionality and analysis of this website. Specifically, the following data is stored and transmitted: Anonymous IDs for identifying logged-in editors of the website, Consent declarations for using external services.

b) Legal Basis for Processing Personal Data

The legal basis for processing personal data using cookies is Art. 6 para. 1 sentence 1 lit. e), para. 3 GDPR in conjunction with §3 para. 1 DSG NRW in conjunction with §3 HG NRW. If processing is based on consent, Art. 6 para. 1 sentence 1 lit. a) GDPR serves as the legal basis.

c) Data Deletion and Storage Period

Cookies are stored on the user’s device and transmitted to the website. Users can control cookie usage through their browser settings and delete cookies at any time. If cookies are disabled, some website functionalities may be restricted.


6. Contact Forms and Email Communication

a) Subject and Purpose of Processing Personal Data

A contact form is available on the RWTH Aachen University website, allowing electronic communication. If a user utilizes this form, the data entered in the input fields will be transmitted and stored. This includes: Salutation, Name, Address (optional), Email address.

Additionally, forms for various registration and contact purposes may collect user-specific data tailored to the context.

For data processing, the user’s consent is obtained during the submission process, and reference is made to this Privacy Notice.

Alternatively, contact can be made via the provided email address. In this case, personal data transmitted with the email is stored.

The data is not shared with third parties and is solely used to process the conversation.

b) Legal Basis for Processing Personal Data

The legal basis for processing data with the user’s consent is Art. 6 para. 1 sentence 1 lit. a) GDPR. For data sent via email, the legal basis is Art. 6 para. 1 sentence 1 lit. e) GDPR in conjunction with §3 para. 1 DSG NRW.

c) Data Deletion and Storage Period

Data is deleted once the purpose of its collection has been fulfilled. For contact form data and emails, this occurs when the conversation with the user has ended, typically when it can be inferred from the circumstances that the issue has been resolved.

Users can withdraw consent for data processing at any time. In this case, the conversation cannot be continued. To revoke consent or object to data storage, users can contact: batteryengineering@rwth-aachen.de. All personal data stored during communication will then be deleted.


7. Mailing Lists

a) Subject and Purpose of Processing Personal Data

Users can subscribe to free mailing lists on the RWTH Aachen University website. Data entered during registration is transmitted to RWTH Aachen University, including: Email address, Name (optional). Consent for data processing is obtained during registration. No data is shared with third parties, and the data is solely used for sending emails.

b) Legal Basis for Processing Personal Data

The legal basis for processing data after registration for mailing lists is Art. 6 para. 1 sentence 1 lit. a) GDPR.

c) Data Deletion and Storage Period

Data is deleted once its collection purpose has been fulfilled, typically when the mailing list subscription is canceled. Users can unsubscribe at any time using the link provided in each email or through monthly reminders.


8. Google LLC

The RWTH Aachen University website uses plugins from Google LLC, 1600 Amphitheatre Parkway, Mountain View, California, 94043, USA.

When visiting a page with Google plugins, a connection to Google servers is established, notifying Google which pages were visited.

If users are logged into their Google account, their browsing behavior can be directly associated with their profile. Users can prevent this by logging out of their Google account.

9. YouTube

The RWTH Aachen University website integrates plugins from YouTube, operated by YouTube LLC, 901 Cherry Ave., San Bruno, CA 94066, USA.

When visiting a page with YouTube plugins, a connection to YouTube servers is established, informing YouTube of the pages visited.

If logged into a YouTube account, user activity can be directly linked to their profile. Logging out prevents this.

10. Facebook Marketing Pixel

This website uses the Facebook Marketing Pixel provided by Facebook Inc., 1601 S. California Ave, Palo Alto, CA 94304, USA, provided that you have consented to the associated processing of your personal data in accordance with Art. 6 para. 1 lit. a GDPR. The Facebook Pixel is a JavaScript code snippet that enables us to analyze the activities of visitors to our website. The analytics tool works by loading a small collection of functions that are triggered when a website visitor performs an action (a so-called event). Such actions include, for example, clicking on links (e.g., “Open Positions”). We use the Facebook Pixel to measure the effectiveness of our advertisements, to define custom audiences for ad targeting, to run dynamic, audience-based advertising campaigns, and to analyze the effectiveness of conversions. This means that, as a user of our website, we may show you advertising (“Facebook Ads”) that is of interest to you through the Facebook Pixel when you visit the social network Facebook or other websites that also use the tool.

Via the Facebook Pixel, we process information about the activities of website visitors outside of Facebook. 11. Rights of the Data Subject

If personal data concerning the data subject is processed, the data subject has the following rights against the controller.

The data subject has, under the conditions defined in Articles 15 et seq. of the GDPR, the right to obtain information from the controller about the personal data concerning them, as well as the right to rectification or deletion, or to restriction of processing. The data subject also has the right to object to the processing and the right to data portability. Furthermore, in accordance with Article 77 of the GDPR, the data subject has the right to file a complaint with the relevant data protection supervisory authority (https://www.ldi.nrw.de/kontakt) if they believe that the processing of their personal data violates this regulation.

If the processing is based on the consent of the data subject (cf. Art. 6 para. 1 sentence 1 lit. a), Art. 9 para. 2 lit. a) GDPR), the data subject also has the right to withdraw their consent at any time. The withdrawal does not affect the lawfulness of the processing carried out based on the consent before the withdrawal; the withdrawal only takes effect for the future.
