Course of studies
Students complete between 29.5 and 30.5 credit points (CP) per semester, consisting of both compulsory and elective modules. During the first semester, students undertake two adaptation courses, each worth 5 CP, designed to establish a common foundation for students with varying levels of prior knowledge.

Additionally, in the first three semesters, students complete compulsory and compulsory elective modules totaling 40 CP, a two-semester seminar module worth 5 CP, and a research lab focusing on battery testing, also worth 5 CP. The research internship, which takes place in the second or third semester, can be carried out outside RWTH, either in industry or at a partner university abroad. In the fourth semester, students complete their Master's thesis, which is worth 30 CP.
Structure

The curricular structure is divided into several parallel compulsory elective or elective catalogues:
- COMPULSORY: Advanced basic lectures
- ELECTIVE: Application-orientated lectures
- SEMINAR: highly specialized, foundation for social aspect discussions in the study program
- RESEARCH LAB TESTING : Independent planning, setup, execution and evaluation of battery tests
- RESEARCH LABS : Practical application of the knowledge and skills learnt through active participation in current research projects
- Final Thesis over 6 months individual research project
Students are free to choose their course content from the above-mentioned module catalogues in accordance with their own interests and study objectives. Fixed specialisations with specific catalogues or predetermined module combinations are explicitly not provided for.
Admission BSTE
According to the examination regulations, various requirements must be met:
- An initial university degree according to the General Examination Regulation pursuant to Article 3, paragraph 4
- Professional admission requirements
- Language skills in English
- The Graduate Record Examination (GRE) for applicants who are not nationals of a Member State of the European Union or the European Economic Area (EEA), or if they completed their schooling career elsewhere than in Germany. The GRE has to be absolved instead of the study aptitude test mentioned below.
Due to the high level of mentoring in the course of the strongly research-oriented teaching, the Master's degree programme in "Battery Science and Technology in Engineering" has a numerus clausus: The number of study places defined by an admission restriction is allocated via a procedure in which the final grade of the Bachelor's degree accounts for 20 per cent and the result of a study aptitude test for 80 per cent of the assessment. Further information and registration for the test can be found below ("Study aptitude test"). Please note that if proof of the test has not been submitted by the application or late submission deadline, the test will be included in the admission procedure with a score of 0 points.
